PETZL EXO
Personal Safety System

The Petzl EXO Personal Safety System provides firefighters with a fast, reliable means of egress from a burning multi-story structure. A firefighter equipped with the system can quickly anchor the fire resistant rope with the Crosby anchor hook and move rapidly towards the point of exit.

The firefighter can then escape via the window. The self-braking EXO device helps prevent the firefighter from falling or losing control of the rope, allowing them to concentrate on getting out of the building.

Once outside, the firefighter can use the EXO to descend to a lower level. Trained personnel can execute the entire exit sequence in as little as 10 seconds.

In a last-resort scenario, the EXO’s advantages of speed, adaptability and self-braking function offer the best possible means of escape.

THE FOLLOWING IS A VERY BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE STEPS REQUIRED
TO USE THE PETZL EXO PERSONAL SAFETY SYSTEM.

THE NEED FOR A SYSTEM

Members should follow their standard operating procedures. When faced with a life or death decision to "bail out", the Petzl EXO Personal Escape System can offer you a quick and effective means of escape.

"OPENING" THE SYSTEM

It is important to pull the hook forcefully with both hands in front of your body to ensure that the EXO clears the bag.

FINDING A SUBSTANTIAL OBJECT

1. Remote Anchoring: Passing the hook around a substantial object. Introduce enough slack to pass the hook and rope completely around the object and enough to tie a clove hitch around the hook.

2. Sill Anchoring: Cup your hand over the hook, pushing it into the casing/sill.

CROSBY ANCHOR HOOK: The Crosby anchor hook is the only anchor hook that meets the requirement of NFPA 1983 (2006 edition) - Standard on Fire Service Life Safety Rope and System Components, for Light-use Auxiliary Equipment. Consumers also receive the benefit knowing that the FDNY has thorough testing and has recorded countless hours of use with this device.

NEGOTIATING THE SILL

Ensure that the EXO will clear the window sill by six inches.

Left hand grabs inner edge of the interior wall (remote anchor) or hand cupped around the hook (sill anchor)
Right hand (still holding the rope) outside, below the windowsill

Roll forward head first out of the window until your upper body and right leg are outside of window

Lock your left leg over the sill and press against interior wall

Maintain the position of your left hand on the interior wall/hook

Holding the rope tightly, release left leg, roll to an upright position

Left hand must continue to hold the interior wall/hook until your body weight loads the EXO

DESCENT CONTROL

Slowly pull the handle towards you to begin a controlled descent. With the handle being throttled with your left hand, the right hand will control speed and "quality" of the descent.

PETZL EXO: The EXO was designed in collaboration with members of the FDNY. It is a unique hybrid design based on the Petzl GriGri. The EXO is designed to be used with 7.5mm rope. The rope guides minimize the chance of rope jamming.

The EXO cam is activated by the user's weight creating a auto-stopping descent control device.

Additional speed control can be achieved by raising the free end of the rope to create additional friction around the U-bolt.
